While some skeptical scenarios use the idea of a simulated reality to challenge the reliability of human cognition, contemporary technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality can also inform experience. Moral skepticism is the view that there is no moral knowledge, for instance, that one cannot know whether a given behavior is morally right or wrong. It characterizes realism as the view that the truth or meaning of sentences is determined by external standards or mind-independent reality. It holds that the scientific view of the world is either exactly or at least approximately true by presenting reality as it is. Anti-realist views reject the mind-independent existence of values and can take various forms.
A different view suggests that reality is made up of many worlds that exist in parallel to one another, each representing a distinct way of how things could have been. In a narrow sense, being contrasts with becoming, and denotes stable or permanent aspects of reality. In the broadest sense, being is the most general category that applies to everything and contrasts only with nothingness. The term reality overlaps with various related concepts, such as being, existence, world, actuality, and truth. This view contrasts being real with being fake, like the distinction between a real duck and a fake one used as a decoy. In a broad sense, appearances are not limited to what people perceive but can also include memories, beliefs, and thoughts.

The most popular such shows have been the Dancing with the Stars and Dancing on Ice franchises. One notable subset, popular from approximately 2005 to 2012, consisted of shows in which the winner gets a specific part in a known film, television show, musical or performing group. This is one of the older variants of the format; shows such as The Dating Game that date to the 1960s had similar premises (though each episode was self-contained, and not the serial format of more modern shows). In the early 2000s, this type of reality show dominated the other genres on the major American networks. There have been various hybrid reality-competition shows, like the worldwide-syndicated Star Academy, which combines the Big Brother and Idol formats, The Biggest Loser, which combines competition with the self-improvement format, and American Inventor, which uses the Idol format for products instead of people. These factors, as well as these shows’ rise in global popularity at the same time as the arrival of the reality craze, have led to such shows often being grouped under both the reality television and game show umbrellas.
In series such as Celebrity Paranormal Project, the stated aim is investigation, and some series like Scariest Places on Earth challenge participants to survive the investigation; whereas others such as Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters use a recurring crew of paranormal researchers. Supernatural and paranormal reality shows such as MTV’s Fear, place participants into frightening situations which ostensibly involve paranormal phenomena such as ghosts, telekinesis or haunted houses. The series Scare Tactics and Room 401 are hidden-camera programs in which the goal is to frighten contestants rather than just befuddle or amuse them. Shattered was a controversial 2004 UK series in which contestants competed to see how long they zumospin casino could go without sleep. In the show, people with different values agree to live by each other’s social rules for a period of time. Another type of reality program is the social experiment which produces drama, conflict, and sometimes transformation.
Non-naturalism, another form of realism, maintains that values differ significantly from empirical properties and belong to another domain of reality. Naturalism argues that values are part of the natural world and can be studied by the natural sciences through empirical observation. Realists hold that values are objective features of reality, meaning that there are mind-independent facts about whether something is good or bad, irrespective of subjective beliefs or personal preferences. Some positions concern the existence of values in general, while others are limited to specific domains, such as moral, aesthetic, or religious values. Formalism, another form of anti-realism, understands mathematics as a practice of symbol manipulation, suggesting that mathematical truth is grounded in whether the manipulation rules permit the construction of a proof.

The rise of AI-augmented disinformation and misinformation demands a fundamental shift in how education must equip citizens to combat it. In a world where reality itself can be programmed, our ultimate challenge is not just to detect deception, but to engage in the collective project of shaping how we construct knowledge and determining what is worth believing in. In this model, knowledge ecosystems function as feedback loops, adapting to new threats and insights. This concept, explored by various thinkers including within UNESCO, defines environments where diverse perspectives, methods, and experiences can interact to generate more resilient understanding. This means designing what can be described as “knowledge ecologies”. Drawing from systems thinking (as per Meadows, 2008; Senge, 2006), the solution lies not only in adding more verification tools but in reconfiguring how knowledge flows.

A number of scripted television comedy and satire shows have adopted the format of the documentary-type reality television show, in “mockumentary” style. Studies have shown that young people emulate the behavior displayed on these programs, gathering much of their knowledge of the social world, particularly about consumer practices, from television.
